Our Mission:
The purposes of the Kootenay Centre or Forestry Alternatives are:
- To exchange and disseminate practical information and ideas concerning sustainable forestry, with individuals and organisations involved with or interested in forest-related activities in British Columbia,
- To promote and facilitate the exchange of information, experiences, and ideas concerning sustainable forestry among forest communities in British Columbia and other forest communities, in particular those in developing countries,
- To facilitate the acquisition, dissemination and application of current research and technical information about sustainable forestry relevant to forest communities, among forest workers and the public in British Columbia and other areas, particularly in developing countries.
Our Vision:
Forests are managed in a manner that: minimizes risk to forest biodiversity, guarantees long-term survival of forest ecosystems, and ensures that local communities receive the majority of any benefits from forest ecosystems.
KCFA sponsors and raises funding for projects and workshops that advance the mission of the organization. KCFA also prepares submissions to processes that potentially will result in changes to legislation or regulations that may contribute to realization of KCFA’s vision. For example, KCFA has organized a workshop on forest tenure reform, sponsored research projects on silviculture practices, provided input on Timber Supply Analyses, supported stream monitoring, initiated regional mapping of high quality old growth forests and supported projects that research and promote ecosystem connectivity in the face of climate disruption.
