BC Nature (legally the Federation of British Columbia Naturalists) is a province-wide federation of 64 member clubs dedicated to “Knowing Nature and Keeping it Worth Knowing.” With roots dating back to 1957 and formal incorporation in 1969, BC Nature brings together naturalists, volunteers, and partner organizations to advance education and conservation across British Columbia. For more than 50 years, the federation has played a leading role in protecting nature through public education, advocacy, stewardship programs, and collaboration with governments and communities building a strong, informed voice for nature throughout the province.

BC Nature delivers two core programs, the Municipal Protected Areas Program (MPAP) and the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) program.

  • MPAP supports Canada’s commitment to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030 by helping local governments assess and register biodiverse areas in the Canadian Protected and Conserved Areas Database (CPCAD).
  • The KBA program provides a standardized framework for identifying and prioritizing sites of high biodiversity value, enabling governments, Indigenous nations, NGOs, and communities to focus monitoring, stewardship, and conservation efforts where they can have the most meaningful impact. The program also piloted a first-of-its-kind First Nations KBA Caretaker model and is now being scaled nationally.
