One of our earliest activities was to bring key partners together to discuss acquiring properties for conservation in the East Kootenay. In doing so, we created a trusted and confidential forum to collectively guide securement decisions. Today our Securement Committee includes partners who are actively involved in acquiring private land for conservation in both the East and West Kootenay.
On top of facilitating the Securement Committee, we also evaluate potential conservation properties using specific criteria. This offers an arms-length approach to prioritizing properties so the most ecologically-significant ones are considered.
What started over twenty years ago with a table of rolled-out maps, a jar full of pencils and a group of knowledgeable people circling parcels of land has led to the conservation of over 83,000 hectares of private land across the Kootenays.
